A Weary Heart Rejoices

Justin was grateful to God for his life. “I had everything,” he says. “I worked with the same company for almost 10 years, was going to be married, had a new daughter and a house that was paid for. Everything was good.”

Then tragedy struck and his world shattered.

“My father committed suicide. We found him after he shot himself.”

He had grown up in church. He was a praying man. But when his father died, Justin ran from the Lord. “I was angry at God,” he says. “I was mad at the world.”

He started drinking to numb his feelings, compounding his depression. “I gave up on everything,” he says. “My fiancée left me. I ended up losing the house. I lost everything.”

He stayed with friends for a while but, eventually, they’d had enough of his drinking… and so had he. It was then when he came to your Evansville Rescue Mission’s P.A.C.E.S. (Purpose, Accountability, Christ, Education, Service) Program.

Through Bible studies, spiritual mentoring, anger management and other life-skills classes, Justin has been healing emotionally and growing strong in the Lord. “The Bible is a handbook for my life. I’m regularly attending church now, and I’m restoring my relationship with Christ,” he says. “I have a different outlook on life.”

Justin spends time with his daughter every weekend now, and he looks forward to graduating from the program, returning to work as a roofer and getting his own place. “I’m going to get everything back that I lost,” he says. “I want to have a normal life again for my daughter. She needs me.”

When he sees his life today and compares it to just a year ago, Justin is thrilled by his transformation thanks to God’s love in his life – and your support. “Without this place, I probably would have ended up drinking myself to death,” he says. “The Mission really does save people.”
